Waterproofing Showers
July 4th, 2009Leaking can be caused by a number of reasons. Poor window seals and condensation are two number one causes. In the shower or bathtub it is usually the result of a seal that is leaking which then allows moisture to seep behind the shower tile into the drywall and underneath structure.
If left unattended this is a problem that will grow and compound itself. Now rather than resealing you could easily be looking at having to replace drywall, studs, and even timbers.
Drywall cannot tolerate even a minimal amount of leakage before it begins to absorb the moisture and crumble. And the trouble is all the new power showers, walk in showers, tiled floors, and multi head showers have resulted in an increased risk of water penetration occurring.
The problem is that the dampness tends to go far beyond just a couple of damp spots. Reports indicate that entire ceilings have collapsed and walls have literally crumbled to pieces.
Another common problem with the dampness is continuous mold problems. Black mold and sub species are becoming the equivalent health crisis to asbestos. These molds are causing serious respiratory problems
When the mold is apparent at least it is a sign that you need to do something about it. But the trouble is the mold isn't always apparent as it grows behind tiled walls.
The membrane kits are designed to eliminate this problem. They install underneath the ceramic tiling and they were designed strictly for this black mold problem.
Mold has become the number one health concern in just a few short years. The reason for the increasing problem is a result of a multitude of issues some of which were addressed earlier.
Others are as simple as the homeowner not regularly resealing around the shower. This should be done at least once a year and more often if you notice the seal breaking down.
You might also want to apply a roll on sealant to ensure the entire shower fixture is waterproofed. There are several different products on the market. Choose one appropriate for your shower finish and your specific problems.
